A well-fitted suit will keep you looking sharp and smart. On the other hand, ill-fitting suits that are either too tight or too loose can make you appear sloppy. While there are many components to a suit, here are 7 things you should check off for a relatively good fit.
1. A well-fitted shoulder should lay flat on your body, with the shoulder pads ending with your shoulder and meeting the sleeve of the suit.
2. About half an inch of your shirt cuff should peek from under your jacket, with the jacket sleeves usually ending above the wrist.
3. A jacket collar that fits well should rest against against your shirt collar without any gaps or folds.
4. When you button your jacket, it should close neatly without the lapels hanging forward or strained lines extending from the button in a 'X'.
5. The length of your jacket should ideally extend past your waist, draping over the top curve of your rear. Using your hands as a marker, the hem of the jacket should hit your knuckles when you place your arms at your sides.
6. Well-fitted trousers should drape smoothly with no horizontal wrinkles under your rear or saggy folds at the back of your thighs.
7. The break of your trousers (a small wrinkle caused by the top of your shoe) should be a subtle horizontal crease, typically one inch from the cuff of your trousers.
