The verandah at European restaurant Masons is the perfect marriage of colonial architectural heritage and flora and fauna of the tropics. Gillman Barracks, the estate that houses Masons, is steeped in history built in 1935 as a military post. With its revival, expect minimalist touches and classic black and white English-styled décor, brought together by the woody browns and forest greens of the island.
To achieve an old English elegance vibe with a tropical twist, we worked with stationers from Paper Tiger Press who used the centuries-old craft of letterpressing to produce an elegant collection of paper products like escort cards, invitations and labels. For flowers we used various shades of mossy green and creamy white florals, styled by Fiore Dorato, to give the setting an equatorial atmosphere.
Cake Over Heels conjured up a triple-tiered cake to reflect old English architecture, in particular the angular and circular designs of colonial-style grilles. The confection was a Tahitian vanilla buttercake with lychee filling, smoothed with Earl Grey buttercream and covered in black and white fondant.
Completing the look, we loaned unique props like a vintage magnifying glass and amber-coloured vases from Commune, and glassware and placemats from Oddjects.
