Before you book your hair and makeup trial, go through this checklist to know what you need and should look out for when you're looking for your artist.
Skills: Are you testing the hairstylist and /or makeup artist's skills out? The first step in finding an artist for you, is to see their portfolio; if you like their body of work, you're sure to be happy. Opt for a trial reflecting your favourite look in their book!
Chemistry: You don't want a diva artist who doesn't listen to her client's needs. Afterall, it's a pretty up-close-and-personal relationship you two will have, so make sure you both get along with each other.
Dress before trial: Never do a trial before you have a dress. The neckline and embellishments can influence your hair and makeup choices. When you are at a dress fitting, take your picture with your hair down, pinned half-up, and one with a loose bun at your preferred placement (topknot, ballet bun, low chignon). This will give your hair and makeup artist a visual to refer to.
Destination wedding: You're having a destination wedding and want to learn how to do your own wedding makeup because you don't trust anyone else, nor have the budget to fly an artist to your wedding. Your artist should skilled enough to be able to teach you how to achieve the final look step-by-step. If you're a makeup noob, tell her to teach you something that's easier (no advance contouring or strobing classes please!) Be sure to shoot each step on your phone or video the session and make a list of all the products used, including tips from the expert.
Have references: Whether or not you've decided to book a trial, have a folder of inspiring hair and makeup looks. Andrea encourages brides to also keep a folder of what they don't like, so it ensures clear communication between you and your artist.

Trust is key: Keep in mind that no matter what hair and makeup look you choose, your makeup may feel a little heavier than you are used to. Minimalists who wear little to no makeup can feel like it's heavy. It's alright to ask questions, but trust your artist. Let him/her explain why he/she chose a certain colour. Look at your completed makeup look at a conversational length away, and not in a magnifying mirror, for the truest perspective.
Flash lashes: Ask for natural lashes vs plastic. Plastic lashes reflect light and look harsh. Pay please: Does a trial cost money? Yes. It's not a beauty product sample. Some makeup artists package trials in to their quote while some artists will separate costs. Andrea encourages brides to make plans for the time after the trial so the session, and money isn't wasted. Take engagement or pre-wedding photos, or go for a romantic dinner with friends or fiance.
