When Mety Choa started out as an evening and bridal dress designer in 2004, she did not imagine that her passion for bridal dresses would grow as much as it has today. Beautiful pieces of high fashion designs that came out of her little boutique in Solo attracted many clients from around Indonesia and abroad, causing her to open a new boutique in Jakarta on 2013.
It was her love for bridal dresses and haute couture that inspired her to create dreamy dresses for future brides. "There is something about couture that made me fall in love. Perhaps because it's personal, handmade, exclusive, and one of a kind. I love the notion that there's a touch of me in every dress I make. Designing dresses is not only a skill; there needs to be emotions, sentiments that you pour into the dress to make it very special." Mety admits feeling an unexplainable pleasure whenever she sees a bride wearing one of her designs and becoming the center of attention. She envisions a bride wearing her dress as a confident woman who is comfortable in her own skin and knows exactly what she wants.
In designing wedding dresses, Mety focuses on harmoniously combining design, the bride's character, the wedding concept and theme, and also the venue; on top of all that, the dress still needs to look very elegant. She states that trends do not always matter, "It's more important for a dress to be classic and timeless as it's a dress one will remember forever."
Her recent bridal collection is inspired by stylish women that wear light and elegant dresses. However, Mety Choa has also explored beyond classic designs with her Urban Samurai collection. "The Urban Samurai is for stylish women with an edgy sense of style. I combined traditional elements like batik, Chinese silk, and French lace with a modern twist to showcase what a beautiful mixture it can be."
In the future, Mety Choa sees herself helping more and more brides live their wedding dreams with her designs. "I hope more people can enjoy my designs and I wish to expand more, nationally and internationally. Perhaps one day I can get Blake Lively and Taylor Swift to wear my designs!"
